Julia Deakin

Born in Nuneaton I worked my way north via the Potteries, Manchester and York to Huddersfield, where I began writing poems on a Poetry MA. My aims there were to learn more about other poets and brush up my literary theory. I hadn’t written poems since I was at school and was a wary workshop participant – avoiding eye contact, concentrating less on writing and more on new ways of sliding under the table. Within a few weeks, however, I found myself sitting up – and by the end had changed my focus for good.

Acclaimed by poets as diverse as Simon Armitage, Anne Stevenson and Ian McMillan, their comments reflect my aims. ‘Horribly wonderful’ is another comment I prize. Poems come when something internal meets something external. Often dark and/or humorous, all are also, I hope, about the human condition.

Nine noteworthy poets off the top of my head include Geoffrey Chaucer, Elizabeth Bishop, Billy Collins, Emily Dickinson, Carol Ann Duffy, Philip Larkin, Les Murray, Sharon Olds and R.S. Thomas. I’m bemused by those who say they don’t read other poets because they ‘don’t want to be influenced’. I’m all for being influenced. Bring it on!
